The production of Schoolhouse Rock, the first middle school play of the year, was held in the Little Theatre February 25.
This production was directed by sixth grade english teacher, Ms. Terry Miller, who had been working on bringing the old Schoolhouse Rock into production on stage. Ms. Miller says, “Schoolhouse Rock is a 70’s T.V show that has been turned into a play.”
Most of the productions held at SCPA in the past were made up of high schoolers only, such as Chicago, Hot Mikado, The Wiz, etc. However, there have been some plays that integrated both high school and middle school casts, such as the productions Yellow Boat and Thirteen. Schoolhouse Rock is solely made up of middle schoolers. Sixth grader Santiago Garcia, an actor in Schoolhouse Rock stated, “To me Schoolhouse Rock is a beautiful thing so if you want a blast from the past you should watch the play.”
Ms. Miller stated that this may be a seasonal play for middle school students to perform in. Sixth grader Kat James, another actor in the production and star actor of the song, “Figure 8” stated, “We go to the best school in San Diego. In most middle schools and high schools they have drama classes but they don’t go into detail like we do here.”
